About 15 years ago I was introduced to MLM but I didn’t know that was what i was doing! LOL I was an extremely successful “party” planner for a Home Decor Company, my area manager LOVED me, I had no idea she was making a cut of everything I did, in fact it never occurred to me until recently, total DUH! I was never asked to bring others into the business, probably because i was dominating my neighbourhood, LOL and she was very happy with what i was doing for her. I don’t remember her name but I do know she was a really nice person.
Then a few years later my husband (no more!) arrived home with a friend of his, military, who was “doing” this Excel Communications thing! So we jumped on board, I still didn’t know or understand what was required, nobody ever told me, i just shared it with a few of my husbands family members so we could save on long distance and that was it, I don’t even think we made any money…. that’s how much i remember.
Now here we are some time later and it is 2005, a friend sends me an email about a Travel Website, something I could own and make money from, i fobbed him off, i was doing extremely well in real Estate, I did not need this! Then at the beginning of 2007 a different friend presented me the same offer – and he actually took the time to pick up the phone and in his extremely persuasive sales manner told me that I “needed” to do this LOL – So I did, and what this did was give me a massive insight into MLM and a business method that I had not really understood before simply because I had never been told, and I shied away from due to lack of knowledge. So it is from there that I arrive here.
Now that I understood the MLM business from the street level if you like, home party’s, talking one on one, inviting people to chat with your sponsor and all that great meet and greet stuff, I know what works and the kind of people it works with. Coming from Real Estate my database of people is extensive and i approached many of them with the opportunity without success, most were concerned i was flipping the switch and leaving RE? So i needed to move in a different circle to find my down-line. So i began searching on-line for possible networking groups in my area, meet-ups, chamber of commerce that kind of thing. As i was cruising the Internet and hanging out at network brunches and breakfasts i came to realize how much MLM and Network marketing was really going on. It was staggering, what was even more amazing is that everybody thought/thinks their product deal is the best! That their pay plan is better than the one your doing so you should think about switching to us! Why do people do that…? What I saw was a great opportunity for people to compliment each others businesses as opposed to compete. What i also knew was that i was not interested in doing something where i had to load my car with my goods! Not only do i do enough of that with Real Estate remember way back 15 years, i did it then too, a little bit of that stuff still adorns my house though it is not stacked in my garage like it used to be. So I was happy that the MLM I was aligned with was an internet based product and it was very easy to carry around. LOL
I worked hard at trying to promote the opportunity and i began to see that no more than 1 of every 20 that joined me actually did anything, so my growth was totally dependant on me and that meant the philosophy of MLM was not working, i was building a downline that was going across not down and the “acrossline” was sitting on their hands! How frustrating is that. I tried to get people to duplicate what i did but they were hard to get on board, they were happy to pay $50 a month to keep their spot JUST IN CASE they got their brother or sister to join! LOL how crazy….so i began my search of the web to see what i could find out about promoting this kind of business and boy did my research return a lot of stuff! And STUFF is basically what it was. I was quite used to working the web as a Realtor, you are on it constantly, storing, searching, uploading etc. So i had what i thought were the basics necessary to dig in and see if there was something i could do to bring the street MLM and the Internet together. What i discovered quite threw me and dismayed me. I was discovering ways to promote and get leads and advertise and get exposure in Social networks my travel team was initially excited and wanted to follow suit but then slowly i found they were moving further and further away from me, at first i could not understand why? Then it dawned on me….they were intimidated because they didn’t get it, they didn’t understand what was going on in the WWW. They had a product that was point, click and pay and thats all they understood – the bottom line was/is that these guys were consumers and that is how they thought! Over the next 3-4 months i was being pulled deeper and deeper into this web and they were moving furhter away. And here we are today Sept 1 2008, I am still connected to the Travel biz but only by a thread, though i still have over 40 people plodding away waiting for their brother to join! and here I am on the verge of one the biggest events on the web with a “thing” called the MAD PLAN.
Over the last 6 months i have been coached, trained, exposed, shown, introduced, educated, hand held, and basically potty trained on the web. I now know how to run SEO, I understand what an RSS can do, i Tweet 3 or 4 times a day, i blog incessantly and am connected to who knows how many other bloggers, ningers, facebookers, myspacers and tweeters. I know what it means to have tag lines and tags, I understand why it is so important not just to read but to comment too, I know the difference between a web 2.0 graphic and one thats not, i know what a signature line is, a hyperlink, i know how to create a landing page and set up auto repsonders….the list goes on and is added to daily. I know what it means to be #1 in google and i know how to make it happen. And I know all of this because of the team of very caring people i am associated with. I could have tried to do this on my own but most likely would have failed, and given up which is most do – it is a very frustrating arena to be in if you dont know or if you dont have somebody to hold your hand and show you.
